Dennett Prize 2024

October 9, 2024

The International Center for Consciousness Studies announces the establishment of the Dennett Prize—an annual prize that will be awarded to an outstanding scholar whose research has significantly advanced the understanding of the brain and consciousness.

The prize is named after renowned philosopher Daniel Dennett (1942–2024). Dennett’s work spanned philosophy of mind, cognitive science, evolutionary biology and artificial intelligence. Across the board he challenged received ideas, and introduced new perspectives. His writing set a gold standard for intellectual clarity and scientific integrity.

Nominations for the prize must be submitted using the form. They should be accompanied by a brief (one page) explanation of the candidate’s contribution to the brain and consciousness research, a curriculum vitae and a selected publication list. If the nominator wishes to draw attention to a particular example of the candidate’s work, available in digital form, this can be attached (maximum three pieces). Self-nomination is allowed.

The prize will consist of a monetary award of USD 10 000. The recipient will be invited to give a Lecture at the annual conference of the ICCS, held in a European city. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered to attend the award ceremony at the annual ICCS conference.

The recipient will be chosen by a vote of the Dennett Prize Committee. The Committee will consist, in the first place, of Susan Dennett, Keith Frankish, Giorgio Vallortigara, Nicholas Humphrey and Dmitry Volkov.

Nominations must be received by 30 November 2024 (the application form is now closed). Decisions will be made by 15 January 2025. The decision will be published on the Center’s website, hardproblem.it. Questions regarding the Dennett Prize should be addressed to info@hardproblem.it.
